Through-Train Primary to Secondary Pathway: Avoid Misconceptions of Guaranteed Places and School Quality

Guidance for parents preparing for Primary One to distinguish through-train groups, feeder schools, and linked secondary schools, understanding the arrangements without treating them as rankings.

Parent starting point

Start with the key facts, then plan for your child

Through-train school groups offer a direct route to secondary education but do not guarantee a place or indicate quality. Parents should grasp the details and limitations to make suitable choices.

15 official through-train groups Period: 2025/26 · A group is a pathway arrangement, not a quality label.
7 districts with through-train groups Period: 2025/26 · District distribution does not indicate admission chances.
441 secondary profiles available to check Period: 2025/2026 · Profiles do not provide primary-school outcome rates.

Confirm the through-train relationship in the official list

A similar name, shared sponsoring body or advertised secondary link does not by itself establish an official through-train group. Confirm the primary and linked secondary school in the list, then ask both schools about arrangements for the child’s entry cohort, choices parents must make, and procedures for considering another secondary school.

Use the secondary profile to prepare later-stage questions

A secondary profile can verify school type, district, website and published Secondary One information, but it does not give an outcome rate for a particular primary school. Explore curriculum, language, support and travel, then verify questions at the secondary school’s official briefing rather than treating the through-train label as a quality guarantee.

Do not confuse through-train groups with SSPA net records

The through-train list describes linked-school relationships. The Secondary School Places Allocation serving-net table records schools serving nets. Their purpose, fields and role in the system differ. Read them separately and return to the latest EDB explanation for the child’s relevant cohort.

Use this with your child

Your parent action checklist

  1. Confirm the primary and linked secondary school in the official through-train list.
  2. Read the latest profiles and official websites for both schools.
  3. Ask the school about progression choices and procedures for your child’s cohort.
  4. Record the through-train relationship, SSPA net and personal school considerations separately.
What this tells you

The data show the number of official through-train groups and their district spread, plus the count of available secondary school profiles.

What this cannot tell you

The data do not indicate any individual school's progression rate, teaching quality, or comparative advantage.

Questions parents often ask

Does the official through-train list guarantee progression?

The list only confirms school relationships and contains no individual outcome or guarantee condition. Verify cohort arrangements with EDB and the schools.

Does a through-train group mean the schools are better?

No. It is pathway relationship data, not a teaching-quality measure, ranking or individual progression result.

Are the through-train list and SSPA serving-net table the same?

No. One describes linked-school groups; the other records schools serving SSPA nets. Read them separately.

How to use these figures

Contains information provided by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the named provider through DATA.GOV.HK. Figures retain their official data period; retrieval date is shown separately.

Enrolment, class size, staff, fees, facilities and SEN reporting are context. They are never converted into a quality score, popularity label, ranking or admission probability.
