Primary One Portfolio Guide: structure, evidence, competitions and submission checks
A good portfolio is not a pile of certificates. It helps a teacher understand the child, the family's support and the school fit within a few minutes.
Work samples, reading, responsibility and natural photos often tell more than unexplained certificates.
Choose activities that match the child and the school, not activities that merely fill space.
Before submitting, recheck whether the school accepts portfolios and the required file format.
Structure
A portfolio a teacher can actually finish reading
Use one master structure, then adjust the emphasis for each school. DSS, private and international schools may need more English, inquiry, service or arts evidence; knock-door files should be shorter and sharper.

Check whether portfolios are accepted, required format, page count, file size, language and deadline.

Build an evidence table
Track date, item, skill, file link, source, ownership, privacy and best-fit school type.

Pick 5-7 school-fit ability points, then choose evidence. Do not start from certificates.

Each image needs one or two sentences explaining action, ability and growth.

Work-sample caption
After shared reading, the child drew the main character and explained how the character solved a problem. This shows comprehension, expression and empathy.
Activity caption
During speech practice, the child learned to wait, listen to prompts and adjust volume. The process built confidence and manners.
Parent note
We support regular reading, polite expression and self-care. Our child enjoys asking questions and is willing to try again after adult guidance.
PDF name
ChildName_Portfolio_SchoolName_2027.pdf. Avoid final_final or filenames without the child's name.
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not exaggerate or rename awards.
- Do not include every paid participation certificate.
- Do not show other children's faces without consent.
- Do not use tiny text, crowded colors or heavy decoration.
- Do not submit the same parent note to every school.
- Do not turn the child into a competition machine.
Is a thicker portfolio better?
No. A clear 6-8 page file with captions and good selection is easier to read than a 30-page certificate dump.
Are awards necessary?
No. Reading habits, work samples, self-care and real growth can be stronger than awards.
Should we enter many competitions?
No. Choose one to three coherent lines that match the child and target schools.
Should every certificate be scanned?
No. Scan representative certificates and summarise the rest if needed.
Should an English-medium school receive an all-English portfolio?
Use English or bilingual wording if the school does not specify. Keep the language natural.
Do government or aided POA applications need a portfolio?
Usually no. POA follows EDB rules. Always check school notices for knock-door or supplementary arrangements.
